Additional information
View advertised in the Journal de Paris on 25 June 1790 (no. 176, p. 710) as part of the Collection des Ports d'Espagne et de Portugal. The dedicatee Count of Fernan-Nunez was the Spanish ambassador in Paris at the time of publication, but his previous role as ambassador in Lisbon might explain his interest in Noel and Allix's plans for a collection of Spanish and Portuguese ports. The draughtsman sitting on the left could be Alexandre Jean Noel himself: in a previous advertisement published in 1788, Noel explained that he travelled in Spain and Portugal between 1780 and 1782 sketching views of ports that he subsequently submitted to the approval of Claude-Joseph Vernet and of Charles-Nicolas Cochin, who encouraged their publication. He planned to publish two views per year, at a price of 12 livres each. This view of Cartagena was advertised as the second issued in the third year since the start of the series. According to the 1790 notice, the print 'has the merit of exhaling a pleasing air of truthfulness [in the depiction of] the location; it is effective and it must please' ('l'Estampe que nous annonc'ons a l'avantage de respirer un air de verite pour le site qui fait plaisir; il y a de l'effet & elle doit plaire').
