Additional information
View advertised in the Journal de Paris on 18 November 1788 (supplement, p. 1379) together with a View of Lisbon, as part of the Collection des Ports d'Espagne et de Portugal. The event depicted took place in June 1782 during the Siege of Gibraltar, in the course of which Luis de Cordova's Franco-Spanish fleet battled the British fleet under Admiral Howe's orders. The dedicatee Count of Fernan-Nunez was the Spanish ambassador in Paris at the time of publication, but his previous role as ambassador in Lisbon might explain his interest in Noel and Allix's plans for a collection of Spanish and Portuguese ports. The draughtsman sitting on the right could be Alexandre Jean Noel himself: in his advertisement, Noel explained that he travelled in Spain and Portugal between 1780 and 1782 sketching views of ports that he subsequently submitted to the approval of Claude-Joseph Vernet and of Charles-Nicolas Cochin, who encouraged their publication. He planned to publish two views per year, at a price of 12 livres each, but only the first two appeared.
