- Additional information
- Bound with accompanying text: PLATE XXIII. VIEW OF GRAND CAIRO. THIS view of grand Cairo is taken from the gate of the Citadel, which stands on a considerable elevation. In the foreground is the square called Romelie, in which is the superb Mosque of Sultaun Hassan, and a little beyond it to the left, a Serai for travellers, a place well known to every reader of those admirable tales the Arabian Nights Entertainment. The small forts on the hillock beyond the town, were constructed by the French, who formed a chain of them from the citadel to Boulac, the port of Cairo on the river, but which is concealed by the dome of the Sultaun Hassan. A part of the Saracenic walls appear on the right hand, but in many parts the town is now open. At a distance may be discovered the division of the Nile which forms the delta".
