Additional information
Bound with accompanying text: "PLATE III. CALCUTTA THIS view of Calcutta is taken from the house of Thomas Graham, Esq. situated in Chouringe, which may be considered as the most beautiful part of the town. It extends along the Esplanade in a straight line, at right angles with the Government-house, and the more ancient residences of the British; and in general has three rows of houses, each surrounded by a garden. These are well built; but it appears doubtful, whether the large windows of European architecture, unprotected from the sun or rain, are well adapted to the heat and wet of a tropical climate. A part of Fort William appears in the back ground, with its public buildings, and beyond it the Hoogly, which is skirted by groves of cocoa nut, mango and other trees. The Esplanade, though unpicturesque, adds greatly to the comfort of the town, for in an evening it is covered with the carriages of the richer inhabitants, who drive rapidly along, and with their numerous torch bearers, form a singular and pleasing scene. The houses are built of brick, covered by a brilliant stucco, there called chunam, which takes a polish nearly equal to scaglioni marble; it is made from the lime of burnt sea shells."
