- Bound with accompanying text: PLATE VI. LUCKNOW. LUCKNOW became the capital of the dominions of the Nawaub Vizier of Oude during the reign of Sujah ud Dowlah, the father of Saadut Ali, the present sovereign. It is pleasingly situated on an elevated bank of the river Goomtee, over which a bridge was built of sufficient height, to be passable during the rains. A part of this is visible in the drawing. The large building on the left is the Harem of Asof ud Dowlah, where his widow now resides; it is only covered with chunam, and is rapidly falling into ruins. The Begum is by no means poor, but she has many nephews and nieces, who are maintained by her. Adjoining to the Harem, but out of sight, is a very beautiful palace, called the Sungi Dalam, built of stone, coloured red, in which Asof ud Dowlah used to give very splendid fetes, and where he used to indulge in every kind of Asiatic debauch. The huts in the centre of the view will give a very good idea of the habitations of the lower orders in Oude. The high grass in the foreground is cultivated for the elephants, whose principal food it is
