- Description
- The turnpike is in the middle distance, with St. Paul's in the background, across fields. The chief interest is in the foreground figures. A 'cit', resembling John Gilpin, gallops over a sow and pigs, losing his hat and wig. A horse rears, upsetting a fat couple from a two-wheeled gig. A group of 'cits' is approached by a crippled beggar supported on short crutches. A man, woman, and child (? Irish haymakers) walk towards the gate. Behind (right) is a house in front of which is a Punch and Judy show, with spectators and a fat barrow-woman crying her wares.
