- Additional information
- A print showing the same view as this drawing was published in 1786 is at Maps K.Top.38.23.c. which identifies the artist of the drawing as 'J.L.' although the drawing itself is not signed. It is possible that this drawing was made after the print and that an untraced 'original' was the basis for this print and not this drawing. There is no record of a church dedicated to St David at Compton Dando. The parish church is dedicated to St Mary. This drawing and the plan and print at Maps K.Top.38.23.a. and Maps K.Top.38.23.c. depict the church of St Mary at Compton Dando. The church as it stands today was extensively remodelled in the nineteenth century but the tower was left largely intact. The title to this drawing, the print and view are incorrect. The date of 1717 is also likely to be incorrect. Both the use of bodycolour and the painterly style suggest a later date of around 1740-1770 which further suggests a hitherto untraced source painting of 1717 on which the print was based.
