The entry in the 1844 catalogue reads: 'These two views represent the old college or convent of a religious order called Bonhommes, which was once the residence of Queen Elizabeth, and was pulled down by the duke of Bridgwater about the year 1802, in order to make room for the present mansion'. Ashridge Priory was demolished in about 1800.
