Additional information
Bound with accompanying text: PLATE I. SANDY BAY VALLEY, ST. HELENA. IN no part of the world is the scenery more wild, more singular, or more picturesque than in St. Helena, a small island situated in the middle of the southern or Ethiopic ocean, and distant four hundred leagues from the coast of Africa, the nearest continent. Within a circumference of twenty-eight miles, it contains upwards of two thousand souls, and is of the greatest utility to navigators, from the supplies of fruit, vegetables, and fresh meat, which it affords in abundance. The most celebrated spot in the island is Sandy-bay Valley, which is to windward, and is consequently unsafe for vessels, the S.E. trade constantly creating in it a very heavy swell, which rolls uninterruptedly from the Cape of Good Hope. This valley is separated from James's valley, where the town stands, by a ridge of hills, from the summit of which the present view is taken. The distant hills uncovered with vegetation, are marle clay, and form a singular contrast with the little country houses of the inhabitants, situated on the billowly hillock, in the plain below. The costume of the island is preserved in the group of slaves that are supposed to be returning to the valley, from James's town. On the right hand, among the trees, may be distinguished the Dicksonia, or tree fern, which grows here in the greatest luxuriance"."
