Description
Plan and elevation for Bernera Barracks in Inverness. Inscribed 'The designe of a Barrack of 326 foot long capablle to lodge 500 men and ther officers. There 24 rooms upon each floor each roume having a distinct entrie with a chimney and four beds capable to lodge eight men which is 192 men upon a floor so that the floors contains 384 persons and the rest of ye 500 men that is the 29 beds more may be had in the garrats that answer to the three stairs which are in the midle. And there will be found roumes more on [on] the garrats fit for keeping of stores' in brown ink in the lower left-hand corner. Inscribed 'The two ends of this Barrack is designed for lodging of the officers that command these 500 men. Each floor has four Roumes of distinct entries and each roume its chimney and two windowes. If each of thes roums be designed for two officers each of them has a distinct roume for a bed with a windowe wher it may be had. Designed by Ja: Smith this 18 Apryl by advice and acording to ye dimensions sent by the Honble Brigr Louis Petit sent from Inverness the 6 Apryl 1718.
