Additional information
There is evidence to suggest this work might be by the Welsh artist Thomas Jones (1742-1803). The initials 'TJ' are similar to those in the signature in works such as 'A Barn at Pencerrig' (1784), private collection, Cat. 144 in ex. cat. 'Thomas Jones 1742-1803: an artist rediscovered' Yale, 2003. Similarly, treatment of line, perspective and colour in this work bears resemblance to works by Jones such as 'The Aventine Hill from the River Tiber, Rome' (1780s), private collection, cat. 91. From his journal, we know that Jones was in Wales in November 1766.
