Additional information
One of five drawings formerly believed to be by Canaletto (see A. P. Oppe_, English Drawings, Stuart and Georgian Periods, in the Collection of H. M. the King at Windsor, London, 1951, pp. 9-10); attributed to Bellotto by F. J. B. Watson in 1953. They are all annotated 'Lucca' in brown ink and numbered in pencil. Maps K.Top.80.21.a. is the preparatory drawing for the painting entitled 'The Piazza San Martino, Lucca, looking towards the Cathedral' (York, City of York Art Gallery, inv. no. 771). Kozakiewicz notes that, in the drawing, 'the campanile is drawn one storey lower than in reality', which suggests that the drawing was actually completed in Bellotto's studio.
