- Additional information
- This drawing appears to be related to the print at Maps K.Top.17.30.b. which depicts the same view. Although this print has been cut down to within the platemark, other versions exist which show it was published on February 1 1795 by Simons, Kirkby & Jones, Canterbury. This drawing appears to be part of a group of drawings either after, or as a basis for prints published by Simmons & Kirkby. Maps K.Top.17.36.3. which is a drawing entitled 'Hall-Place the Seat of George Gipps Esq', is inscribed in black ink 'Pubd June 1, 1795, by Simmons & Kirkby, Canterbury' below the image and 'J Lawrence delint' in the lower left-hand corner. Similarly, other drawings which bear an inscribed publication line of Simmons and Kirkby are at Maps K.Top.17.37.2. and Maps K.Top.17.46.4. One drawing, of Nackington House, by Lawrence and Ravenhill and clearly part of the group and in the same hand, but without the Simmons & Kirkby publication inscription, is at Maps K.Top.17.45. Maps K.Top.17.30.a. displays a enough subtle differences from the print as well as a competent handling of line to suggest it was the basis for, rather than a copy of, the print.
